San Leo, also called Montefeltro is a village located about 500 meters above the sea level in the province of Pesaro-Urbino. San Leo stands on a huge boulder around impassable and accessible only through a single road that is cut into the rock.
On the highest point of the spur rises there is the Forte reworked by Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the fifteenth century on Federico lll da Montefeltro’s order. Thanks to its shape, this ancient village inspired the writer Dante Alighieri about his famous work the Divine Comedy.
San Leo has got a remarkable architectural heritage: the pre-Romanesque Pieve, the Romanesque and Lombard Chathedral at theXll century, the Fort; the Sacred Art Museum recently opened in the Mediceo Palace sparsi sul territorio comunale, the ruins of several castles scattered on the Municipal area such as Pietracuta and Piega, the Franciscan Monastery of St. Igne, the Dominican Monastery of Monte Pietracuta, the Montemaggio Church, with a fine wooden coffered ceiling.
The San Leo landscape is one of the most beautiful and characteristic in the Region with a sweeping views of surrounding mountains and along the Marecchia valley.
San Leo is equipe with modern sports facilities, such as soccer field, tennis courts, an area where it is possible to practice gliding. Moreover, it is possible to practice paragliding too.
